A Complete Chimney Maintenance Guide

Chimney maintenance breaks down into three simple windows: before you burn, while you're burning, and everything else. Here's what belongs in each.

Most chimney problems are the result of skipped maintenance rather than bad luck. Here's a simple framework for what to check and when.

Before burning season

  • Schedule a sweep and Level 1 inspection — ideally before the first cold snap, since availability tightens up once everyone else has the same idea.
  • Check the damper opens and closes fully, and doesn't stick partway.
  • Look at the cap and crown from ground level with binoculars for obvious cracks, rust, or debris buildup.
  • Confirm your wood supply is properly seasoned, not still green from this year's split.

During burning season

  • Watch for popping or crackling sounds during a burn — often a sign of hardened creosote inside the flue.
  • Notice any smoke rolling into the room instead of drawing up, which points to a draft problem worth addressing rather than working around.
  • Keep an eye out for a stronger-than-usual odor, particularly on humid days.
  • Test carbon monoxide detectors monthly during heavy use.

Off-season

  • This is the best window for any repair work — masonry crews can work without weather pressure, and you're not racing a cold snap.
  • Check for water stains on ceilings or walls near the chimney that might have gone unnoticed during winter.
  • If you're selling or buying a home, this is when a Level 2 inspection with video documentation typically gets scheduled.

What to leave to a professional

Sweeping, masonry repair, liner work, and anything involving roof access should go to a certified technician — not because homeowners can't learn the skills, but because the tools (HEPA vacuums, proper brushes, safety harnesses) and the experience to spot secondary damage make it a much faster, safer, and ultimately cheaper visit than a DIY attempt gone sideways.

A good rule of thumb: if you can see the problem from the ground with binoculars, you can flag it. Anything beyond that belongs to someone who does this daily.
