FAQ — Chimney Sweep, Inspection & Repair | Twin Cities, MN
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The same answers you'd get if you called us directly — pricing, scheduling, what's included, and how we handle repairs across the Twin Cities metro.

Pricing & Estimates

What things cost, before you call.

Level 1 is $69 and Level 2 is $119. Level 1 covers the readily accessible parts of the chimney and is the standard annual check. Level 2 adds an interior video scan of the flue and is typically required at a home sale, after a chimney fire, or when you change the fuel type or appliance connected to the flue.

Sweeps start at $149 for a standard residential flue. The exact price depends on how many flues there are, how accessible the chimney is, and how much buildup has to come out — heavily glazed creosote takes meaningfully more work than ordinary soot.

Because it would be a guess, and guesses on masonry work almost always get revised upward once someone's actually on the roof. Roof pitch and height, how far damage extends below the visible surface, whether mortar needs color-matching, and whether staging is required all change the number, and none of that is visible from a phone description. We'd rather look for free and give you a figure you can trust.

No. Estimates are free with no service call fee, on any repair. You only pay if you decide to move forward.

For sweeps, $149 is the starting point. Inspections are a flat $69 or $119 depending on level. There's no minimum tacked onto repair estimates — you're quoted for exactly what needs doing.

Scheduling & Service Area

Getting on the calendar.

Next-day service in most cases across the metro. If you have an active leak, smell smoke inside the house, or suspect a chimney fire, call rather than filling out the form and we'll prioritize you.

Roughly a 40-mile radius of Minneapolis and St. Paul — Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka, Washington, Scott, and Carver counties, plus parts of Wright County and western Wisconsin near Hudson. Not sure if you're in range? Call and we'll tell you right away.

Sunday through Thursday, 8AM to 8PM. Friday 8AM to 4PM. Closed Saturdays.

For an active leak, smoke inside the home, or a suspected chimney fire, call us directly rather than booking online and we'll get to you as quickly as we can within our operating hours.

Inspections

Level 1, Level 2, and when each applies.

Level 1 ($69) is a visual check of the readily accessible parts of the chimney — the standard annual maintenance inspection. Level 2 ($119) includes everything in Level 1 plus a full interior video scan of the flue, and is what's typically required for a home sale, after a chimney fire, or a change of ownership or appliance.

Annually for most households, even with light use — it's the standard recommendation from every major chimney safety organization. If you're buying or selling a home, or just had a chimney fire, that calls for a Level 2 specifically.

Often, yes. Most inspection contingencies and title companies expect the documented interior video scan a Level 2 provides, since it's the only reliable way to confirm the flue's actual condition.

Sweeping & Maintenance

Keeping the flue clear.

Once a year for most households. Minnesota's long burning season, October through April, lays down creosote faster than the national average, so if you burn several times a week, or burn softwood or unseasoned wood, treat annual as the floor rather than the ceiling.

No. We lay down protective runners before we start and use HEPA vacuums throughout, so soot and dust don't get into your home.

Most sweeps are done start to finish in under an hour, one visit.

Yes — a visual safety check is included in every sweep. If we spot something that needs a closer look, we'll show you photos and quote it separately.

Repairs & Masonry

What breaks, and why.

Our workmanship, in writing. If something we did needs fixing within three years, we cover the labor. Storm damage and other acts of nature aren't workmanship, and materials fall under the manufacturer's warranty, but we'll still take care of you with a significant discount on labor even then.

Freeze-thaw cycling. Water gets into brick and mortar, freezes, expands, and breaks the surface apart — Minnesota runs that cycle dozens of times each winter. It accelerates once it starts, since every damaged surface absorbs more water than the one before it.

We color-match mortar and use salvaged or closely matched brick wherever possible, so a repair reads as maintenance rather than a visible patch.

Not indefinitely. A cracked crown is the entry point for the water that turns into freeze-thaw damage below it. A straightforward crown repair today is often a partial rebuild in two or three winters if it's ignored.

Company & Chimney Types

Who we are, what we work on.

Yes, on every job — that's non-negotiable for us and for the safety of your home.

All of them — full masonry and brick, prefabricated and factory-built, wood-burning and gas. Older Twin Cities homes tend to have masonry chimneys with clay tile liners; newer suburban construction is usually factory-built with a chase and chase cover.

Both. Gas appliances still vent through a chimney or liner that needs periodic inspection, even though there's no creosote to sweep.

Animals, Odor & Draft

The stranger symptoms.

Don't try to remove it yourself or block the flue while something might still be inside. Call us — we remove the animal and any nesting material, then install or repair the cap so it doesn't happen again.

Creosote plus humidity. Warm, damp summer air moves down the flue instead of up it, carrying the smell of built-up deposits into the room. A sweep resolves it — the deposits have to physically come out, since nothing masks the smell for long.

Usually a blockage, a stuck damper, or a draft problem. In newer or recently weatherized homes, it's very often draft — the house is airtight enough that the flue can't pull the make-up air it needs. That gets misdiagnosed as a dirty chimney constantly, and sweeping alone won't fix it.
