Creosote Buildup Explained

Creosote is behind more sweep calls and chimney fires than anything else on this list. Here's what it actually is and how it forms.

If you've ever been told your chimney has "buildup," this is what that means — and why the amount and type of buildup matters more than most people realize.

What creosote actually is

Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood — a mix of unburned particles, tar, and moisture that condenses on the inside of the flue as smoke rises and cools. Every wood fire produces some amount of it; the question is how much accumulates before it gets removed.

The three stages

  • Stage 1: A light, flaky, soot-like residue. Easily removed with a standard brush during a routine sweep.
  • Stage 2: Darker, more textured, and beginning to bond to the flue walls. Still removable with standard tools, but requires more thorough work.
  • Stage 3: Glazed and tar-like, sometimes described as looking like black glass. This stage is highly flammable and often can't be fully removed with standard brushing — it may require specialized chemical treatment or mechanical removal.

Why Minnesota winters make it worse

A genuinely long burning season — October through April for most households — gives creosote far more opportunity to build up than in milder climates. Add in damp or unseasoned wood, which burns cooler and produces more residue, and Minnesota chimneys accumulate creosote faster than the national average by a meaningful margin.

How it's removed

A standard chimney sweep handles Stage 1 and most Stage 2 buildup with professional brushes and a HEPA vacuum system, leaving no mess behind. Heavier, glazed Stage 3 buildup sometimes needs additional treatment beyond a standard sweep — we'll tell you honestly which situation you're in before doing the work.

The smell test is real: a strong, sharp odor from the fireplace, especially in humid summer months, is often the first sign that buildup has progressed further than a quick brushing will fully resolve.
